Looking for the Slaters

Hi there

My name is Gordon Leathers and I am currently researching my mother's family history - the Slater family from Glemsford.

I was wondering if you have a local contact with some knowledge of the family name who could be of assistance to me as I have traced my family back a few generations but am getting rather stuck!

Best Wishes
Gordon Leathers

Usual routine: contact Gordon through me if you can help.

Oakley and Argent

Hello!

I am a newcomer to this site.

I have interests in the Oakleys and Argents of Glemsford.

My Gt.Grandfather was an Oakley and there is a connection to the Argents.

Can anyone help?

Regards Eileen

As usual, if you can help Eileen, either log in and add a comment, or contact me and I'll forward your reply.

Gowers End

Hello

I was wondering if anyone knew much about the history of Gowers End - in particular why it had this name etc? Are there any present day Gowers families interested in this road too?

Many thanks for any info you have.

Browne Family

I am researching my JUDDE ancestry in and around Oxfordshire and Warwickshire especially around Banbury in the 16th & 17th Century.
I have a John JUDDE who married an Avis or Avies BROWNE on 22 November 1585 in Banbury.

The only baptism found to date is for an Avies Browne who was baptised on 6 August 1555 in Glemsford, the daughter of one Robti BROWNE.

Other research involving the son of John and Avies, one Anthony Judd (baptised on 1 January 1588 in Banbury), he married a Joane GEORGE (baptised 7 November 1591 in Fritwell) on 24 June 1612 in Banbury. Joane GEORGEs mother was one Katherine BROWNE baptised circa 1565 and could be a sister to Avies mentioned above.

If anyone has any information on any of these families JUDDE, BROWNE, or GEORGE, I would like to hear from you.

It may be that only BROWNE family of Glemsford may be found, but any early material or details would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
David Judd

Goody Family

Hello,

I am researching the Goody family name and have found a William Goody born in Glemsford around 1842, with a father Henry.

William can be found on Colchester census' for 1861/71 & 81

Is anyone researching this family line?

Regards,

Bonny Family

I have recently been searching census records for my sister-in-law who is researching my husband's family.

Their great grandmother Ellen was the daughter of Thomas Clark(e) of Bures Hamlet (born in Bures Hamlet) who married Sarah, born in Glemsford around 1840.
The most likely candidate in the 1841 and 1851 censuses is Sarah Bonny, whose parents were both silk weavers in 1841 and whose mother was still a silk weaver in 1851 while her father had become a coal porter. In 1851 Sarah, aged 11, was employed as a silk winder.
It is possible that Thomas Clarke her husband may have been an offshoot of the Glemsford Clarkes, though born elsewhere, since he married a Glemsford girl.

Has anyone else come across the Bonny family. I will be looking on the site for the history of silk weaving in Glemsford.

Contactable through me, as usual

Looking for Lindberg

Looking for information on my great grandfather:
Franz Herman Lindberg

I understand he lived in the village for about 25 years after many years abroad ... and may be buried in the church yard.
The only information I have is that I think he was South African and died in about 1958 and that The Rev.R.W Walls was vicar at the time.
If any one has any info it would be great to hear from them.

My e-mail is
sandy.diggines@onetel.net

Thanks a lot Fran Clune (nee Vie)"
